Ongoing Climate and Implementation Assessment

Purpose

Any initiative for improvement in schools should be undertaken with a clear plan for evaluating the progress of that initiative as it is implemented.  Ongoing evaluation of the Developmental Designs approach allows strategic and tactical alterations as necessary to expedite success.

Process

Administrators

Schools may continue using the School Development Assessment Program year by year or every other year,  monitoring school climate to ensure that problems do not go undetected and unaddressed for very long. Additional assessment through means such as professional development plans and goal-setting, supporting, and monitoring with the consulting teacher offer school leaders an ongoing approach to assessment .

Teachers

Many teachers begin a process for assessing their teaching practices during their Developmental Designs training. In addition to tests and student work products, they use surveys, interviews, teacher-recorded observations, colleagues' observations, and tallying to monitor student behaviors, attitudes, confidence, and skills, both social and academic.

Students

When students self-evaluate their social and academic progress, they are more motivated to work toward improvement. They usually take great interest in the results of teacher surveys, interviews, observations, and tallies, and participate with interest when asked to evaluate themselves or their peers. Goal Achievement Scales (GAS) offer a simple, effective way for students to monitor their own progress.

Consulting Teachers

Developmental Designs consulting teachers manage their support of schools through an ongoing assessment process. They work with school leaders to set specific goals at the beginning of the year, provide progress reports during the year, and summarize the results of the efforts to achieve goals for the year. They may provide brief surveys or opportunities for feedback at staff meetings to continuously gather data to guide Developmental Designs initiatives.
