Musical Chairs

For Middle Level & Elementary

Community Level 3 - Comfortable

Materials: Recorded music or percussion instrument

How To Play: Create a circle with one less chair than players and play recorded music or a percussion instrument. When the sound stops, players sit in the chair nearest them. The one without the chair is out and becomes the sound player or maker.

Plan for Success: Model and practice how to safely take the empty chair. Discuss and decide upon some rules for the game. For example: no running, first person with both hands on chair or first person to touch the chair gets the chair, no pausing, or hovering, over a chair to ensure getting it, etc..

Variations: Eliminate more than one chair at a time. Another variation is to pile up on laps as the chairs are removed.
